Contents Page Update

I have altered my magazines content page and nearly completed it. I inserted the new masthead at the top of the page and made some alterations which I was concerned with. I just need to now change the main image of the contents page as the photo I am currently using is not mine and was there as an example when making the magazine. Here is my contents page.

This is my contents page. I now need to make the template on InDesign.

The Stone Roses

The Stone Roses

The Stone Roses are an English rock band formed in Manchester in 1983. They were one of the pioneering groups of the Madchester movement that was active during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Other groups part of this movement include Happy Mondays, Inspiral Carpets and James. The band's current members are vocalist Ian Brown, guitarist John Squire, bassist Mani, and drummer Reni.

The band released their self-titled debut album, The Stone Roses, in 1989. The album was a breakthrough success for the band and garnered critical acclaim, with many critics regarding it as one of the greatest British albums ever recorded.

As well as this, the group decided to capitalise on their success by signing to a major label but their current record label Silvertone would not let them out of their contract, which led to a long legal battle that culminated with the band signing with Geffen Records in 1991, releasing their second album Second Coming.

The Stone Roses called a press conference on 18th of October 2011 to announce that the band had reunited and would perform a reunion tour of the world in 2012, including three homecoming shows in Heaton Park, located in their hometown Manchester.

With NME
The day following Heaton Park, NME released this edition, featuring The Stone Roses exclusively on the 30th of June, 2012:

Furthermore, when announcing their reuniting, The Stone Roses again featured on NME, using an old classic and well known picture of the band as the main image which NME originally used for an older edition back in 1989:

Manicstreetpreachers

NME then released another Stone Roses edition, featuring Shane Meadows who was directing the bands documentary, Made Of Stone at the time in April 2013:

Back in the 80's and 90's, The Stone Roses featured on numerous front covers of NME:

'I Wanna Be Adored' is one of the bands most popular songs and is featured as the first track in their Very Best collection. As well as this, the band always open with I Wanna Be Adored and has become iconic to Stone Roses fans everywhere.

Change of House Style

FWN Beatles

I have decided to change my house style as NME have changed theirs. I feel this change looks better and more professional. As I do not have my new main image yet I created a Beatles edition in the style of magazine. It still follows the codes and conventions. I have also put my new masthead in the front cover. The front cover can be seen underneath:

I created this front cover using Photoshop.

History of NME

NME

NME was created by Theodore Ingham and is a UK weekly pop/rock music journalism publication, published since March 1952. NME started as a music newspaper and gradually moved toward a magazine format during the 1980s and 90s. It was the first British paper to include a singles chart, in 14 November 1952 edition.

The picture below was the first publication of NME

The picture below was the "original" logo which was used from 1978 up until 2010 as well as an edition featuring The Smiths with the masthead.

NME

In 2010, NME redesigned again led by art director Joe Frost in a bid to make the title more 'heavy weight' and 'mature'. Underneath you can see the 2010 to 2014 logo as well as the first issue the newer masthead featured on:

Finally, in October 2013 with a new editor, NME redesigned again in a bid to assert 'authority, credibility and depth of knowledge' this time by art director Mark Neil. The most recent logo and first edition in which it was featured is located below:

New Masthead

Change in Masthead
I have decided to change my masthead as I do not like the font used and want to alter what my masthead looks like as it is an important part of the magazine and has to stand out but also look original. My original masthead is underneath:

I used elephant font to create this masthead and merged each letter individually as well as making the font red. The masthead stands for 'Suck It And See' which is the fourth Arctic Monkeys studio album as well as my favourite album. I need to change the font on Photoshop and create a new front cover all together.

This is my new masthead which I created using Photoshop. I downloaded a font from DaFont on to my computer and created a new FWN masthead. FWA stands for Favourite Worst Nightmare which was Arctic Monkeys' second album which is music related. I prefer this masthead to the old one as it looks original and simple but also modern and stands out to the audience.

The masthead above is the one which will now feature above my contents page at the top but smaller, like my original contents page

NME's Latest Double Page Spread

I took a picture of one of the double page spreads in the latest edition of NME. Like the original Arctic Monkeys September edition, the double page spread is similar, this time with close up pictures of band members of the horrors. I have also noticed a change in NME as they feature more double page spreads in their magazines, with at least 4 in the latest edition.

The following double page spread is the Arctic Monkeys edition:

There are similarities in these double page spreads, especially with the images. I will take inspiration from these and model my double page spread on the likes of these examples.

Latest NME edition

New NME

NME have released a new issue last week, featuring neo-psychedelic band The Horrors on their front cover and double page spread. The front cover is simple and has a strong and clear main image of the band with the headline imposed center of the front cover.

NME seem to have changed their house style recently, adapting a new masthead and following a particular style, with all text backed with a rectangular block like the masthead and headline. Ever since the October edition featuring David Bowie last year, they have changed their masthead and have kept it for every other edition since.

The others below are recent editions and show the "new" NME. Personally, I think this change in look makes the magazine look more professional and relatable to the target audience.

This The Smiths edition is strong as it follows a strict colour scheme (red, yellow and white) and has all the codes and conventions of a magazine. It follows the similar house style again with the same font for all text which makes it look simplistic yet effective.

Again, this is a good front cover as it follows a colour scheme and has the same text.

Arctic Monkeys

Arctic Monkeys

Arctic Monkeys are an English indie rock band from High Green, Sheffield. The band consists of Alex Turner, (lead vocals, lead/rhythm guitar), Jamie Cook (rhythm/lead guitar), Nick O'Malley (bass guitar, backing vocals), and Matt Helders (drums, backing vocals). The band have released five studio albums: Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (2006), Favourite Worst Nightmare (2007), Humbug (2009), Suck It and See (2011) and AM (2013).

Arctic Monkeys are one of NME's favourites to feature for their front covers and have more than one exclusive edition in their back catalogue of front covers. Last year in August NME provided an all exclusive Arctic Monkeys NME edition which featured all you need to know about the band. This was released before their UK tour in 2013. The front cover of this special edition is located underneath:

They have also featured on other magazines such as Q, The Fly, Mojo and even GQ. There are some examples of front covers which they have featured on underneath:

Within each front cover that the band do, Arctic Monkeys always put all four band members into the main image which is what I aim to do. I need to take a new main image with a better camera.

Underneath is the bands latest video for the fourth track of AM(2013) Arabella:
